About the position

The Family Services Specialist position within the Children's Services Act at Hanover County's Department of Social Services is a professional role focused on providing complex social services. The incumbent will be responsible for assessing client needs, conducting investigations, and ensuring compliance with state and local regulations. This role involves direct interaction with vulnerable populations, including children and adults, and requires a strong understanding of social work principles and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Interview customers to assess needs and assign to appropriate groups.
  • Perform investigative duties including screening referrals for validity and complaints of exploitation, neglect, and abuse.
  • Provide psychosocial support to individuals and families coping with chronic or acute issues.
  • Ensure reports of suspected abuse/neglect are assigned to appropriate staff.
  • Provide after-hours on-call coverage and respond to emergencies in protective services.
  • Prepare social histories and represent the agency in court proceedings.
  • Conduct field visits to residential facilities and consult with therapists and staff.
  • Develop and conduct training for staff and interns.
  • Monitor and administer specific assigned programs and services.
  • Develop, write, and review service plans for clients.
  • Track expenditures and prepare budget estimates for services.
  • Conduct intensive in-home counseling and prepare reports for referral sources.
  • Establish and maintain case records and update cases in the state computer system.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in a human services field or any field with two years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of Family Services/social work theories and practices.
  • Ability to apply crisis intervention methods and counseling techniques.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy, preferably in Microsoft Office and OASIS software.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work effectively.

Nice-to-haves

  • Family Services experience preferred.
  • Familiarity with child welfare laws and adult services regulations.
