About the position

The Family Services Specialist 1 position is an entry-level role within the State of Nevada's Health and Human Services Division. The primary purpose of this role is to assist families in achieving self-sufficiency by determining eligibility for various public assistance programs, including Medicaid and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. Specialists will also provide coordinated employment and training services, assist clients with applications, and evaluate information to establish eligibility for benefits. This position offers opportunities for progression to a journey level upon successful completion of training and meeting qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Determine eligibility for public assistance and health-related programs.
  • Assist clients in completing applications for various services.
  • Research and verify information provided by clients through contact with landlords, employers, and utility companies.
  • Evaluate and process information to establish eligibility for benefits.
  • Compute income and assess factors impacting benefit levels.
  • Make determinations according to program regulations and policies.
  • Provide coordinated employment and training services, including vocational guidance and support.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent education.
  • Two years of experience in a clerical/administrative/program support role with customer relations.
  • Experience in obtaining, verifying, and evaluating information.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize work to meet timelines and standards.
  • Experience in applying and explaining program rules and regulations.
  • Performing mathematical computations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as an Administrative Assistant III in Nevada State service.
  • Experience as an Administrative Assistant II in Nevada State service.
  • Sixty semester credits from an accredited college or university in relevant fields.
