About the position

The Bilingual Family Advocate position at the Mental Health Association of Alameda County (MHAAC) is designed for individuals who have personal experience as caregivers for loved ones with mental health challenges. This role focuses on providing support, advocacy, and resources to families navigating the behavioral health care system in Alameda County. The position emphasizes empathy and understanding, leveraging the advocate's own experiences to assist others in similar situations. The role includes comprehensive training and offers a supportive work environment aimed at reducing stigma and promoting mental health awareness.

Responsibilities

  • Assist clients in navigating the complex behavioral health care system in Alameda County.
  • Support clients via phone, virtual meetings, or in-person consultations.
  • Provide information, support, advocacy, encouragement, and referrals to community resources.
  • Attend, facilitate, and support family caregivers self-help groups and existing family support groups.
  • Document key components of calls and activities in databases and logbooks.
  • Participate in liaison roles with key partners such as NAMI affiliates.
  • Engage in community outreach activities.

Requirements

  • Direct lived experience as a family caregiver of a loved one with a mental health challenge or serious mental illness.
  • Bilingual in one of Alameda County's threshold languages: Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin), Farsi, Korean, Spanish, Tagalog, or Vietnamese.
  • Demonstrated work history, which may include paid or unpaid experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, specifically Outlook and Word.
  • Valid California driver's license and motor vehicle available for daily use.
  • Proof of full Covid-19 vaccination and willingness to obtain recommended booster shots.
  • Ability to pass a fingerprint background check.

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Experience navigating the Alameda County Behavioral Health care system.
  • Experience working in a non-profit environment.
  • Experience using video-based platforms such as Teams and/or Zoom.
  • Experience working with diverse populations in underserved communities.
