About the position

The Executive Director/Owner of Desert Compost will lead the organization in its mission to promote composting and sustainability in the Coachella Valley. This role involves overseeing operations, securing funding, and implementing strategic plans to enhance community engagement and environmental impact. The Executive Director will be responsible for managing a team, developing educational programs, and advocating for climate resilience and social change through composting initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Set own schedule while being regularly available Monday to Friday and some weekends.
  • Implement a new organizational structure in coordination with the team.
  • Oversee and lead all development activities and initiatives.
  • Lead the strategic planning process for the organization, including annual and multi-year planning, goal setting, and OKRs.
  • Track fundraising initiatives, efforts, and accomplishments.
  • Serve as project lead for grant opportunities, overseeing proposal development, implementation, and reporting on project activities and financials.
  • Monitor and document grant expenditures and grant-funded activity to ensure compliance with regulations and terms of grant awards.
  • Work with Program Coordinator to troubleshoot ongoing processes and refine systems in alignment with organizational growth.
  • Partner with the Development Coordinator to ensure record donor interactions and grow the donor base.
  • Directly supervise 1-4 employees as determined collaboratively by the team.
  • Work with the Founder & Program Coordinator to set up succession planning.
  • Ensure the organization grows new resources and capabilities to execute the strategic plan.
  • Maintain organizational values of Integrity, Communication, & Earth.
  • Lead team meetings and knowledge management functions for the organization.
  • Advance business development and strategic initiatives.

Requirements

  • A degree in business administration, sociology, education, climate/environmental science, non-profit leadership or similar is preferred.
  • A minimum of 3+ years of professional experience in operations leadership and management experience.
  • Experience managing people and teams in operations, culture, fundraising, knowledge management, leadership, learning, and impact.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior consultative, operational experience in fast-growing service organizations in the climate, environmental, or social justice sector.
  • Strong internet and computer skills, including knowledge of Excel, Microsoft Office, Google G Suite, and management platforms such as Monday.com.
  • Keen listening, networking, collaboration, coaching, conflict resolution, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Passion for the environment and resource conservation.
  • Personable, inclusive, and community-minded attitude.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent project management skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and projects.
