About the position

The Underground Equipment Operator is an entry-level position focused on the construction, maintenance, and repair of electrical underground distribution systems. This role involves working at various locations and may require travel to other states based on customer demands. The operator must prioritize safety while performing tasks around energized high voltage systems and is responsible for maintaining equipment and tools in good working order.

Responsibilities

  • Work safely while performing new construction, maintenance or repair work of energized and de-energized underground.
  • Assist with installing underground transformers.
  • Assist in replacing fuses in transformers and clear faulted circuits and systems.
  • Maintain company vehicles, equipment, and tools in good working order.
  • Perform rigorous physical labor as required.
  • Understand proper use of company radio and operation of heavy equipment.
  • Understand basic rigging and proper use and maintenance of hand tools.
  • Receive and follow directions effectively.
  • Learn basic knowledge of materials used in the job.
  • Identify primary and secondary voltage on a circuit and be familiar with induced voltage.
  • Assist with the installation and hook up of a single-phase transformer.
  • Understand basic concepts of equipment set up and grounding.
  • Work at heights and/or in confined spaces safely.
  • Check voltage on transformers and understand flag and tag procedures.
  • Install and remove service as needed.
  • Inspect rubber goods and PPE properly and understand when to wear personal protective equipment.
  • Use Kellum grips appropriately and identify different types of materials used.
  • Willingness to glove/work live high voltage distribution lines and work outside in inclement weather.

Requirements

  • 5-year minimum of recent field experience.
  • Able to read and communicate effectively in English.
  • Able to obtain a Commercial Driver's License permit within 60 days of employment.
  • A Commercial Driver's License is preferred.
  • Able to travel long distances on short notice when required.
  • Able to work for extended periods in various locations when required.
  • Able to lift in excess of 50 lbs.
  • Willing to work overtime when requested.
  • Willing to work outside of the normal work schedule including weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
