About the position

Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is seeking a dedicated Equipment Operator/Drain Layer to serve our clients by expertly servicing, repairing, and replacing sewer and water services. This role involves performing water and sewer line repair, replacement, and installation through excavation activities, including trenchless and slab penetration. The ideal candidate will value professionalism and punctuality, and will be committed to ensuring customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Perform water and sewer line repair, replacement, and installation through excavation activities.
  • Locate problems using specially designed equipment and mark where digging must occur.
  • Dig and backfill trenches and breakup/remove concrete by hand and on excavators/loaders.
  • Install or repair individual sewer and/or water service lines serving private properties.
  • Operate sewer cleaning equipment, including power rodders and high velocity water jets.
  • Service, adjust, and make minor repairs to equipment, machines, and attachments.
  • Withdraw cables from pipes and examine them for evidence of mud, roots, grease, and other deposits.
  • Clean, jet, and cable building drains and sewers.
  • Prepare and keep records of actions taken, including maintenance and repair work.
  • Install rotary knives on flexible cables mounted on machine reels according to the diameters of pipes to be cleaned.
  • Tap mainline sewers to install sewer saddles.
  • Cover repaired pipes with dirt and pack backfilled excavations using air and gasoline tampers.
  • Comply with all OSHA trenching safety requirements.
  • Follow safety policies and procedures and abide by all BFP standards of performance and code of ethics.
  • Maintain a courteous demeanor with all customers and associates.
  • Maintain company vehicle, ensuring cleanliness and organization, both inside and out.
  • Respect the customer's property.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 2 years of verifiable excavation and drain cleaning experience in a residential service and maintenance operation.
  • Must obtain journeyman drain layer certification.
  • Must obtain confined space/competent person certification.
  • Must be willing to obtain a Class A license with taker and air-brakes endorsements within first 90 days.
  • Extensive knowledge of excavation work.
  • Knowledge of plumbing field concepts, practices, best practices, procedures, tools, and equipment.
  • Valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
