The Equipment Mechanic I or II position at TxDOT's North Harris Maintenance Office involves performing repair, maintenance, and inspection work on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment used in highway and bridge construction. Responsibilities

  • Perform repair and maintenance on fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
  • Inspect work performed by shop mechanics and contracted vendors.
  • Adjust brakes and replace brake system parts, including air brake and anti-locking systems.
  • Analyze and interpret computerized diagnostic equipment information.
  • Check lighting and wiring mechanisms for proper functioning.
  • Complete repair order paperwork and enter data into fleet information management system.
  • Maintain and repair heavy equipment used in construction and maintenance of highways/bridges.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, and repairs on motor vehicles/equipment.
  • Prepare vehicles for use by checking required safety features.
  • Troubleshoot, test, and repair electrical systems, electronic ignitions, and fuel injection systems.
  • Use computerized diagnostic analyzer systems for complex diagnostic work.
  • Perform quality assurance/analysis on repaired vehicles and equipment.

Requirements

  • 2 years of experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair for Equipment Mechanic I.
  • 4 years of experience in automotive, medium/heavy truck, or construction equipment diagnostics and repair for Equipment Mechanic II.
  • Valid driver's license required for driving a state vehicle.
  • Must obtain a Class 'A' Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within 120 days of employment.
  • Motor Vehicle State Inspector license required if performing state safety vehicle inspections.
