About the position

The mission of the Kentucky Energy & Environment Cabinet (EEC) is to improve the quality of life for all Kentuckians by protecting our land, air, and water resources by utilizing our natural resources in an environmentally conscientious manner. The Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves is an agency in the EEC cabinet. The mission of the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves is to conserve Kentucky's natural heritage. We administer the state's natural heritage, natural areas, rare plant, wild rivers, and Heritage land conservation fund programs, among other conservation programs. We are a team of over 30 biologists, land managers and data scientists. By joining the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves as an Environmental Scientist III (terrestrial invertebrate biologist) in Franklin County, you will be tasked with coordinating the states terrestrial invertebrate conservation programs, including pollinators and globally rare insects, across Kentucky. This position will serve as an Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves terrestrial invertebrate biologist, focusing on rare insects and pollinators. This position will coordinate the development and implementation of invertebrate conservation and inventory projects in the Biological Assessment Branch at the Office of Kentucky Nature Preserves.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and coordinate invertebrate conservation, inventory, and research projects in the areas of Lepidoptera, Hymenoptera, and other important insect groups, with a special focus on globally rare and/or pollinator species.
  • Processes collected specimens, photos, as well as enter data from multiple sources into the OKNP Natural Heritage and biodiversity databases.
  • Contributes to statewide atlas efforts to document various groups of insects in Kentucky.
  • Assess conservation status of insects by reviewing and updating state and global ranks for OKNP and NatureServe using standard methodologies.
  • Develops and implements protection strategies and management effects research for rare insects in collaboration with botanists, ecologists, and land managers.
  • Works collaboratively with staff on rare insect and pollinator habitat management and monitoring.
  • Develops outreach strategies, materials, and trainings for public and professionals related to terrestrial invertebrate biology and conservation.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in biology, Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, or related field (Master's degree preferred).
  • Five (5) years of experience in natural resource management, conservation planning, insect biology, or related field.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and coordination skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as a part of a team.
