About the position

Serve in a leadership role in maintaining University adherence to safety standards and compliance with environmental regulations set by state and federal regulations. Responsible for the University Environmental Health and Safety Plan, including updating existing descriptions, developing new sections as needed, and making the plan accessible to the University community. Develop and administer training programs for safety procedures and compliance with environmental regulations appropriate for faculty, staff, and students participating in facilities work, health science programs, Student Health Services, Public Safety, laboratory courses, laboratory research, and studio courses. Facilitate and/or monitor routine safety inspections in collaboration with our Facilities program and maintain records of these inspections. Coordinate storage and regular removal of hazardous waste. Work with departments and programs to maintain current inventories of chemicals. Maintain a current list of MSDSs and locations of chemicals on campus and make them available to all units that utilize or store chemicals. Represent the University during any external inspections. Communicate and collaborate regularly with multiple units on campus, including Facilities, Student Health Services, Public Safety, Human Resources, and Academic Departments. This position reports to the Associate Provost for Academic Planning and Faculty Affairs.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and interpret guidelines and standards set by federal, state, and local government organizations.
  • Evaluate and update existing University policies and procedures that contribute to the Environmental Health and Safety Plan.
  • Develop additional policies and procedures that are needed.
  • Make readily available University Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures through the University webpage and communication to specific units or the whole University.
  • Serve on the Emergency Response Planning Committee.
  • In collaboration with the Emergency Response Planning Committee, make assessments to evaluate risks and prepare response plans.
  • Schedule, oversee, and coordinate the storage, handling, and disposal of chemicals, biologicals, and their wastes.
  • Work with departments and programs to maintain up to date inventories of chemicals and plan removal of chemicals for reasons such as damage, expiration, age, etc.
  • Maintain an up to date database of all university MSDSs and locations of chemicals and make available to units who utilize or store chemicals.
  • Provide training for faculty and staff on proper handling, storage, and disposal of chemicals, biologicals, and their wastes.
  • Develop and administer training programs for safety procedures and compliance with environmental regulations appropriate for faculty, staff, and students participating in Facilities work, health science programs, Student Health Services, laboratory courses, laboratory research, and studio courses.
  • Maintain and evaluate incident and loss records.
  • Write and submit an annual report documenting training sessions, updates to safety plans, the status of the chemical inventory, routine internal inspections, and incidents and losses.
  • Represent the University during any external health and safety inspections.
  • Communicate well with all departments and programs who need support related to adherence to safety standards and compliance with environmental regulations set by state and federal regulations.

Requirements

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of common systems for data gathering and sharing, to be used for tracking and maintaining records, data, and reports.
  • Ability to track, interpret, and implement current guidelines set by federal, state, local and Arcadia regulations.
  • Knowledge of components of Environmental Health and Safety plan and experience updating and writing components of an Environmental Health and Safety plan.
  • Experience developing and delivering training.
  • Ability to facilitate teamwork and encourage compliance and cooperation.
