Under general supervision of Air Permitting Section Head, the environmental engineer performs intermediate-level work by developing and planning for analysis and evaluation of moderately complex industrial sources of air pollution concerning construction and operating permits.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and evaluates air pollution sources and control equipment, through plans and specifications, located at moderately complex industrial facilities, which are proposed for construction or modification. Issues construction permits as needed according to state and federal regulations. Attends public meetings and/or hearings related to these permits and serves as an agency representative. Serves as an expert witness for court proceedings or administrative hearings related to these permit decisions.
  • Analyzes and evaluates applications and supporting data and issues operating permits for moderately complex industries, including major source Title V operating permits, as needed according to state and federal regulations. Attends public meetings and/or hearings related to these permits and serves as an agency representative. Serves as an expert witness for court proceedings or administrative hearings related to these permit decisions.
  • Plans and conducts site visits at air pollution sources as needed to determine conformance with approved plans and specifications and collects data for the evaluation of operating permits. Consults with industrial officials concerning regulations and air pollution control.
  • Assists in overseeing/training EA I's on an as needed basis.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by section manager.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Management and at least two (2) years of entry-level engineering or construction management work experience.
  • A bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or Construction Management and at least one (1) or more years of environmental engineering.
  • A master's degree in engineering.
  • The education must qualify the applicant to become registered as a Level A Professional Engineer in South Carolina.

Nice-to-haves

  • An engineer in training (EIT) is desirable along with the ability and educational background to become a registered professional engineer.
  • Environmental and/or air permitting experience (knowledge of the Clean Air Act; knowledge of industrial processes and the associated pollution control equipment).
  • Demonstrated excellent communication skills.
  • Desire to serve the public.
