About The Position

The Managing Principal Engineer has full responsibility for directing and monitoring project work within a technical unit or area of a larger engineering department, with a focus on in-service digital initiatives supporting surveys and inspections. The Principal Engineer leads in their area of specialization and assigns work according to priority. The professional acts as a technical resource and mentor to principal, senior, and entry- to mid-level engineers in the area of responsibility. Responsible for day-to-day activities, including the maintenance of the quality, content, consistency, and continuity of all technical work performed in an assigned technical unit or area, including the evaluation, development, and implementation of digital technologies that enhance survey and inspection efficiency and effectiveness.

Requirements

  • B.S. degree in Civil, Structural Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Marine, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering, or other related disciplines; an M.S. is preferred
  • Graduate from University and a minimum of 12 years of related industry experience.
  • Preference for graduates from a marine-industry-recognized college or university.
  • Experience in international business and technical processes, as well as international requirements and problem resolution, is necessary.
  • International experience or knowledge of international business and related technical processes, requirements, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency in the English language, verbally and in writing, commensurate with the scope of statutory certification and services, and their anticipated future work.
  • The management skills to organize, plan and direct the work activities of other professional employees.
  • The human relations skills necessary to organize, direct and motivate entry, mid-, and senior-level professionals. These skills are also necessary to develop strong client relationships at the highest levels.
  • Ability to obtain a working knowledge of the ABS Health, Safety, Quality, and Environmental Management Systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding and comprehension of ABS' strategic, technical, and business positioning in the marine industry.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development of short- and long-range business plans and related annual operating and capital expense budgets.
  • Maintains an active awareness of business and management developments affecting present and potential customers.
  • Maintains awareness of the product and service capabilities of the business. Identifies improvement and developmental needs, including digital technologies and tools that support surveys and inspections; takes action to capitalize on prospective market opportunities; and makes recommendations for technology, technical tools, and manpower skills necessary to implement new and improved products and services.
  • Leads the identification, evaluation, and implementation of digital technologies to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of surveys and inspections, including remote inspection tools, robotics, artificial intelligence, visualization technologies, and data-driven solutions, as applicable.
  • Develops and implements strategies to optimize survey and inspection activities through the use of digital tools, data, and analytics, including technologies intended to reduce the need for manned entry into tanks and confined spaces.
  • Collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to support the successful integration and adoption of digital initiatives and related technologies.
  • Ensures that assigned engineering positions are adequately staffed with qualified and competent engineering personnel capable of carrying out assigned technical projects in accordance with established policies, procedures, and technical standards.
  • Ensures that all ABS Quality System requirements are fulfilled regarding project work within a technical unit or area.
  • Monitors the delivery and quality of technical services to customer satisfaction.
  • Prepares annual performance appraisals. Evaluates and communicates individual performance appraisal issues with staff members under his/her direct supervision and recommends compensation adjustments and advancements to senior management.
  • Identifies training needs and determines appropriate training programs for developing the potential of subordinate and engineering staff members, including training and change management needed to support adoption of new digital tools and processes.
  • Plans and monitors ABS mandatory, required, and other training needs of subordinate staff members.
  • May serve as an account manager on technical projects for designated customers and actively promotes the services of ABS to clients.
  • May serve on technical or industry committees and represent the company as spokesperson at industry conferences or meetings, including forums related to digital innovation, survey technology, and inspection modernization.
