This role is a crucial member of the healthcare team responsible for the infection prevention of endoscope preparation, which is critical for patient safety. By reprocessing endoscopes, the technician must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to preclean, leak test, decontaminate, inspect, disinfect, transport, and store endoscopes in accordance with industry standards, guidelines, regulations, and manufacturer's instructions for use. The technician also demonstrates responsibilities by providing assistance to nurses and physicians during procedures, including all types of endoscopic procedures and emergencies, utilizing endoscopes, accessories, and therapeutic equipment. They may assist in obtaining biopsy specimens and polyps under the direct supervision of an RN. This role also involves maintaining professional working relationships, promoting positive public relations, seeking guidance when needed, being receptive to feedback, and maintaining accurate records and logs related to scope reprocessing and QA monitoring. Specimen handling is also a responsibility, though N/A for reprocessing-only technicians. The technician must observe and maintain isolation and standard precautions, follow handwashing guidelines, use two patient identifiers, and provide safety and comfort measures for patients. They are responsible for appropriately labeling and bagging specimens, handling dirty equipment to prevent cross-contamination, and helping to maintain a neat and safe environment. Initiating and maintaining a friendly, professional, courteous, and respectful rapport with patients, responding to their needs in a timely manner, and following HIPAA guidelines are essential. The role also involves enhancing the attitude and teamwork of the unit to facilitate a positive work environment, working as a team member, accepting assignments, and demonstrating flexibility. Professional practice responsibilities include maintaining skill levels by completing yearly competencies and mandatory training, pursuing personal and professional growth, attending staff meetings, following HR policies, and participating in the orientation and training of new employees. The technician follows the daily schedule to ensure the proper endoscope is available, sets up procedure rooms, tests scopes, troubleshoots equipment, and efficiently turns over rooms between cases, including proper pre-cleaning of scopes.
