Sanford Health, the largest rural health system in the United States, is dedicated to transforming the health care experience and providing access to world-class health care in America’s heartland. This role involves providing patient care and transportation, functioning as part of a comprehensive emergency medical services (EMS) response system under medical oversight. Responsibilities include delivering emergency patient care, stabilizing and safely transporting patients ranging from non-emergency to life-threatening emergencies, and performing interventions with basic ambulance equipment. The position requires competence in pre-hospital trauma and medical situations, administering first aid, life support, and advanced life support including comprehensive patient assessment, airway management, 12-Lead capture, and medication administration. Extensive documentation, communication with patients, families, and hospital personnel, and determining appropriate patient facilities are key aspects. The role also involves maintaining the ambulance, restocking supplies, cleaning equipment, and ensuring the ambulance is ready for the next run. Additionally, EMTs in a hospital setting will assist Registered Nurses (RNs) with patient care, demonstrate understanding of Emergency Department flow, and provide age-related patient care protocols. They will observe, record, and report patient vital signs and condition changes, prepare equipment, and assist with patient transfers. High school diploma or equivalent is required, along with completion of an accredited training program for licensing. Knowledge of emergency medical principles, practices, and techniques, as well as equipment troubleshooting, is necessary. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is required, and depending on location, national registry status as an EMT may be required. State licensure may be necessary depending on state requirements. National Incident Management System (NIMS) ICS100, 200, and 700 completion is required, along with continuing education hours as mandated by accreditation. A valid Driver's License with a good driving record is required, and individuals must be 18 years or older (approval needed for those under 21 to drive). This may not be required for hospital settings. All driving policies, assignments, and insurance verification are determined by the department leader.
