About the position

Embedded tutors regularly attend class sessions of designated Gateway Math courses in-person and online to provide direct academic support. In collaboration with and under the guidance of the course instructor, embedded tutors provide coaching assistance, interventions, and tutoring in one-on-one and small groups, lab, and activity settings. In addition, specialists also conduct individual and group tutoring sessions outside of scheduled class times. Specialists provide students with individualized assistance and support during and outside of class, and they model successful student behavior and encourage student engagement and participation. If classes occur in person, tutoring will occur primarily in the Niceville campus and the Fort Walton, Crestview, and DeFuniak satellite campuses. Tutoring will also take place online.

Responsibilities

  • Attend class sessions of designated Gateway Math courses in-person and online to provide academic support.
  • Provide coaching assistance, interventions, and tutoring in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Conduct individual and group tutoring sessions outside of scheduled class times.
  • Establish contact with students on the first day of each semester in courses.
  • Attend planning meetings with course instructors and Academic Intervention Specialists.
  • Reach out to students in need of tutoring and coordinate individualized support.
  • Provide tutoring during class in one-on-one interactions and/or small groups, labs, and activities.
  • Work collaboratively with faculty and other embedded tutors on workshops and tutoring strategies.
  • Facilitate group tutoring sessions aligned with course content in-person and online.
  • Assist students in utilizing technology, taking notes, and using study skills effectively.
  • Serve in a mentoring capacity to help students connect with intervention and support services.
  • Engage with students to address learning gaps and reinforce key concepts.
  • Foster a positive learning environment and model good student behavior.
  • Provide high-quality interventions in Mathematics according to Instructor specifications.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Supervisor.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma, Associates/Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • A grade of B or higher in Calculus 1.
  • A recommendation from a content expert (instructor, former instructor, department chair, university supervisor, etc.).
  • Previous tutoring experience preferred.
  • Ability to discuss and explain math concepts.
  • Skilled in interpersonal, oral and non-verbal communication skills.
  • A demonstrated level of leadership, responsibility and accountability.
  • Ability to navigate online platforms to facilitate virtual tutoring.
  • Ability to attend classes on the Niceville, Fort Walton, Crestview and potentially DeFuniak Springs campuses.
