The Eligibility Specialist position at the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) in Bangor, Maine, is responsible for determining initial and continued eligibility for public assistance programs. This role involves gathering sensitive information, performing quality control, and ensuring high standards of customer service in a fast-paced environment. The specialist will interact with clients from diverse backgrounds, requiring strong interpersonal and conflict resolution skills.

Responsibilities

  • Interview clients to gather necessary facts, data, and documentation for public assistance applications or recertifications.
  • Evaluate information and apply allowable standards and criteria for eligibility determinations.
  • Explain program eligibility requirements, rules, regulations, and individual rights to clients.
  • Review and analyze information for accuracy, identify inconsistencies, and request necessary documentation.
  • Answer inquiries and refer clients to various programs as needed.
  • Identify potential benefit overpayments and assess causes for recovery referrals.
  • Detect potential fraud and refer cases to the Fraud Investigation Recovery Unit.
  • Accurately enter data into an automated system to ensure eligibility results are correct.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, co-workers, and other agencies, both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform intermediate mathematical calculations as required.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all applicant and recipient information.

Requirements

  • A four-year combination of education, training, and/or progressively responsible experience in a social services setting demonstrating interviewing and data gathering skills.
  • A Bachelor's Degree in Social Services, Business Administration, or a related field.
