About the position

SpaceX was founded under the belief that a future where humanity is out exploring the stars is fundamentally more exciting than one where we are not. Today SpaceX is actively developing the technologies to make this possible, with the ultimate goal of enabling human life on Mars. The EEE (electrical, electronic, and electro-mechanical/electro-optical) parts reliability team at SpaceX is a multidisciplinary group dedicated to ensuring the reliability of high-performance 38999 (and similar) connectors and flight components, including integrated circuits, discrete semiconductors, and passive hardware. As a member of the EEE parts reliability team, the EEE component engineer plays a critical role in ensuring the selection of reliable, cost-effective components across our programs. This person will be responsible for evaluating new and existing components through communicating with suppliers, reviewing qualification reports and performing hands-on physical teardowns. Additionally, they will be responsible for maintaining compliance with certification requirements and interacting with customers. The ideal candidate is familiar with piece part families and common quality/reliability defects; is adept at using analysis tools for characterizing life expectancy of electronic hardware; articulates risk assessments clearly to customers; and collaborates well with cross-functional teams of varying backgrounds and levels of experience.

Responsibilities

  • Drive the selection and qualification of high reliability EEE components and connectors for current and future SpaceX flight vehicles
  • Manage EEE piece part certification, including destructive analysis, reliability data collection and review, and completion of customer certification deliverables
  • Work with supplier quality and EEE component suppliers to resolve issues with, and drive improvement of, component design, manufacturing, and quality control
  • Perform piece part data reviews, part approvals, and ongoing approval maintenance
  • Evaluate qualification data, reliability data, and process control data to ensure parts used in SpaceX products are reliable, effective, and suitable for the application
  • Develop and present approval rationale and reliability risk assessments to SpaceX customers
  • Perform and evaluate results from destructive physical teardowns of components
  • Develop accelerated test profiles for component-level screening and qualification testing

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in physics or an engineering discipline
  • 1+ years of experience in EEE part reliability, failure analysis, and/or DPA

Nice-to-haves

  • Master’s degree or PhD in relevant fields
  • 1+ years of experience operating EEE failure analysis lab equipment, including Laser Decap, X-Ray, CSAM, SEM/EDS, Soldering Station, Optical Microscopy, Nisene Etch, Ultrasonic, Cross-Section/Mount/Polish equipment, HALT/HASS, etc.
  • 3+ years of experience with EEE parts reliability engineering in commercial, industrial, automotive, military, and/or aerospace industries
  • Experience with accelerated environmental screening and qualification techniques, and corresponding acceleration factors
  • Experience in wafer fabrication, EEE part production, PCB fabrication, design, assembly, packaging, and testing facilities
  • Knowledge of manufacturing qualification, process controls and the differences among commercial, automotive, military, and space grade EEE parts
  • Fundamental knowledge of failure modes and mechanisms in active and passive EEE parts
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
  • Strong sense of accountability and ownership with excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity with the following standards: AEC-Q100, AEC-Q200, AEC-Q101, MIL-PRF-38535, MIL-PRF-38534, MIL-STD-883, MIL-STD-1580, EEE-INST-002, PEM-INST-001, SMC-S-011, SMC-S-010, SMC-S-016, IPC, JEDEC, GEIA-STD-0005-2
