About The Position

This position is responsible for interpreting/translating using American Sign Language, English-based sign and other visual language and communication practices to provide interpretation of auditory communication for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The Interpreter may also facilitate communication among the deaf/hard of hearing students, hearing peers and Lakeland School personnel. This is a full-time school year position with full benefits.

Requirements

  • High school diploma plus two additional years of formal preparation related to interpreter preparation, and two to three years of relevant prior experience.
  • Proven basic skills in arithmetic with an ability to count, look up a numbered item, or sort items in numerical order.
  • Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction License O020, Educational Interpreter.
  • The above licensure must be maintained as a condition of continued employment.
  • Criminal background check free of convictions of abuse of individuals or misappropriation of property while in a formal caretaking setting.
  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects students' privacy. During the course of duty, the employee will have access to all information that is needed to perform their job, but they shall not have, or seek to gain access to student information that is not necessary to perform their job.
  • Every employee, even one who does not use protected student information in their work duties, is obligated under the provisions of FERPA.
  • All employees must protect student privacy and respond to situations that may put a student's privacy at risk.

Responsibilities

  • Interpret/facilitate communication for deaf or hard of hearing students in the classroom enveloping the total education experience including interactions with teachers, students and friends.
  • Interpretation may occur in a variety of settings beyond the classroom such as, but not limited to, field trips, assemblies, community experiences, IEP meetings and other school sponsored events.
  • Communicate with teachers, read classroom lessons and preview any materials, movies or videos when applicable.
  • Participate in IEP meetings and student/parent conferences as appropriate and/or requested by the Director of Special Education.
  • Identify and adjust language level to match comprehension of deaf/hard of hearing student.
  • Interpreter may serve as a language model to the student and also work with other students supporting group and/or peer-to-peer communication and play.
  • Meet with classroom or Deaf/Hard of Hearing teacher on a regular basis in regard to communication needs of deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Prepare and provide instructional reinforcement as needed or directed by Teacher for the Deaf/Hard of Hearing.
  • Interpret in social situations and work to bridge successful student/teacher interactions through supporting self-determination, self-awareness and self-advocacy skills.
  • This includes when the student's behavior may be interfering with their learning or the learning of others.
  • Assist the classroom teacher in the preparation of materials, clerical or other teacher assistant duties during a class period(s) when interpreting services for the student are not required.
  • Participate in in-service activities for students, school personnel and community to enhance deaf awareness.
  • Adhere to Federal, State and School policies, procedures and Educational Interpreting ethical standards in regard to matters of confidentiality concerning personal information about students.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to county safety and risk management efforts.
