About the position

The Basic Books Group is seeking an Editorial Assistant to provide support to two editors primarily focused on acquiring titles in the fields of business and economics. This position is based in New York City and operates under Hachette Book Group's hybrid working model, which requires employees to be in the office two days a week. The Editorial Assistant will play a crucial role in the editorial process, which includes reading and evaluating submissions, performing various administrative tasks, and developing relationships with authors and agents. The successful candidate will also be responsible for writing cover and catalog copy, preparing title fact sheets and profit and loss statements, and liaising with the contracts department to prepare deal memos. Additionally, the Editorial Assistant will transmit manuscripts and follow up with key departments such as Legal, Copyediting, Managing Editor, Design, Production, and Sales to ensure a smooth workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Read and evaluate submissions.
  • Perform administrative work to support the editorial team.
  • Develop relationships and communicate with authors and agents.
  • Write cover and catalog copy.
  • Prepare title fact sheets and profit and loss statements.
  • Prepare deal memos and liaise with the contracts department.
  • Transmit manuscripts to relevant departments.
  • Follow up with key departments including Legal, Copyediting, Managing Editor, Design, Production, and Sales.

Requirements

  • 1-2 years previous book publishing experience preferred (internships acceptable).
  • Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Strong writing, analytical, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office Word and Excel required; knowledge of databases and ability to produce reports is a plus.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively in both individual and group settings.
  • Proven ability to deliver timely, accurate work products and demonstrate good follow-up and follow-through.
  • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively while ensuring accuracy of work through attention to detail.
