About the position

The R&D Laboratory Support Technologist position for a Metrologist at Sandia National Laboratories involves the calibration and certification of electrical equipment for NNSA standards laboratories and Sandia line organizations. The role requires developing new procedures, supporting measurement uncertainty analyses, providing training, and participating in audits. The Metrologist will operate and maintain calibration systems, generate certificates and reports, and work on improving calibration quality and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Calibrate and certify electrical equipment such as oscilloscopes and multimeters.
  • Develop and document new procedures for calibration processes.
  • Support measurement uncertainty analyses and provide training to customers.
  • Cross-train into other disciplines within the Primary Standards Lab.
  • Participate in surveys and audits related to calibration.
  • Make measurements and operate manual and computer-controlled calibration systems.
  • Generate certificates and reports for calibration activities.
  • Develop and maintain computer-based and written procedures.
  • Work with project leaders to improve calibration processes.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent plus a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Experience evaluating, assembling, disassembling, and troubleshooting electrical equipment.
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory environment following ES&H protocols.
  • Computer skills including expertise in Microsoft Office, especially Excel.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q security clearance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Associates degree from an ABET accredited program in engineering technology or a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with customer interaction experience.
  • Experience in a high-rigor lab environment following procedures and policies.
  • Familiarity with ISO 17025 standards.
  • Experience developing and documenting effective processes and procedures.
  • Experience programming computer-controlled equipment using LabView or similar languages.
  • Interest in measurement standards activities with experience in a standards lab.
  • Training in statistics, error analysis, and uncertainty calculations.
