About the position

The Early Career Environmental Scientist position at WSP involves supporting multidisciplinary teams in conducting biological fieldwork and site assessments for coastal restoration and other environmental projects. The role is designed for recent graduates or those with limited experience, providing opportunities to learn and grow in various environmental practices while contributing to significant projects aimed at sustainability and climate resilience.

Responsibilities

  • Perform fieldwork related to coastal restoration and other development projects, including wetland delineations and habitat classification.
  • Conduct threatened and endangered species surveys, seagrass surveys, and water quality monitoring.
  • Assist with site assessment and remediation activities, including sampling of surface water, soil, groundwater, sediment, and air.
  • Maintain quality control standards and procedures for accurate measurements and reporting.
  • Generate documentation of fieldwork using electronic systems and maintain site notebooks.
  • Comply with safety guidelines and site-specific procedures.
  • Utilize technologies in performing studies and analysis of coastal biological datasets.
  • Prepare reports, tables, charts, and illustrations for data interpretation and presentation.
  • Prepare and implement site Health and Safety Plans (HASPs).
  • Interact with regulatory agencies, subcontractors, landowners, and clients professionally.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks under the guidance of project managers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, natural sciences, physical sciences, or equivalent field of study.
  • 0 to 1 years of relevant post-education experience.
  • Willingness to learn and take initiative, as well as be mentored.
  • Excellent research skills with an analytical mindset.
  • Demonstrated time management and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in various settings and weather conditions, capable of lifting 50 lbs.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proficient self-leadership with attention to detail and multi-tasking abilities.
  • Familiarity with living shorelines and coastal restoration practices.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing and office software.

Nice-to-haves

  • Participation in local professional practice organizations.
  • Ability to pass OSHA 10-hour Construction Training Course and 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER training course.
  • Ability to swim and conduct in-water work, including snorkeling and skin diving.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and GPS equipment.
  • Interest in operating unmanned aerial vehicles (drones).
