About the position
The Direct Support Professional (DSP) plays a vital role in enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities, including those with autism, cerebral palsy, ADHD, bi-polar disorder, and schizophrenia. This position involves providing compassionate care and support to help clients achieve their personal goals and maintain their independence. The DSP will work closely with clients in various settings, including their Adult Residential Facility (ARF), home visits, doctors' appointments, and community-based outings.
Responsibilities
- Assist clients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, grooming, and meal preparation.
- Monitor and record vital signs to ensure the health and safety of clients.
- Provide support for individuals with autism by implementing personalized care plans and engaging in therapeutic activities.
- Facilitate social interactions and community involvement to promote inclusion and enhance social skills.
- Assist with memory care activities to support cognitive function and daily living skills.
- Maintain a clean and safe environment for clients, ensuring all safety protocols are followed.
- Document client progress and communicate effectively with team members regarding any changes in behavior or health status.
- Collaborate with healthcare professionals to coordinate care plans tailored to each client's needs.
Requirements
- Previous experience in caregiving or patient care is preferred, especially in ARF's or group home settings.
- Knowledge of vital signs monitoring and basic medical procedures is advantageous.
- Understanding of autism spectrum disorders and effective communication strategies for working with individuals on the spectrum.
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to build rapport with clients and their families.
- Ability to handle challenging situations calmly and effectively while maintaining professionalism.
- Must be compassionate, patient, and dedicated to providing high-quality support.
- Flexibility to work various shifts as needed, including evenings and weekends.
