About the position

This position is accountable for assisting with day-to-day operations of dredges and vessels as assigned by the Leverman (or Deck Captain or Dredge Captain). Individuals in this position are knowledgeable of dredge and vessel operations and perform a variety of duties to ensure safe and efficient marine operations. This position will typically work under close supervision of the Mate. The incumbent must support the guiding beliefs and core values of Orion, which are centered on Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Teamwork most importantly, with each built upon the all-important foundation of Integrity.

Responsibilities

  • Works as assigned by the Mate to perform assigned deck duties that are required for safe, efficient operation of the vessel.
  • Coordinates activities of deckhands.
  • Coordinates all activities on dump and outside the dredge and equipment.
  • Supervises deckhands on maintenance, painting, and cleaning of the dredge, tenders, anchor barges, barges, and landing.
  • Supervises deckhands on adding shore pipe and pontoons and monitoring dump and making appropriate/safe decisions for the crew, vessels, and equipment.
  • Instructs and trains the crew in safe and proper job procedures.
  • Corrects safety deficiencies.
  • Handles lines to moor vessels or rig towing lines.
  • Rigs cables for lifting with cranes or anchor barges and handle lines.
  • Loads and unloads materials from vessels/barges and docks/trucks.
  • Performs all above duties in a safe and efficient manner observing all safety rules and regulations.
  • Participates in Health, Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.

Requirements

  • A minimum of 2 years of experience on a dredge or marine vessel is required.
  • Knowledge of all day-to-day operations required for barges and vessels.
  • Ability to properly and safely operate skiffs and vessels up to 36', including docking, inspection and maintenance of these types of crafts.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work well with other crew members.
  • Ability to understand and follow specific directions from supervision.
  • Ability to submit to and successfully complete any specific safety or job training that may be required by the customer, the job and/or the contract with client.
  • Ability to work with close supervision and be capable of repeating tasks of short duration according to established operating procedures and work practices.
  • Ability to work within standards of accuracy as dictated by the customer.
  • Ability to speak on a VHF radio in English.
  • Ability to abide by the safety rules and regulations of the Company or other regulatory agency.
  • Ability to work 12-hour shifts consisting of 2 weeks on and 1 week off.
