About the position

The Donor Specialist position at KBR is focused on supporting the SPARC Program, which aims to educate military personnel and their families about brain donation and facilitate the donation process for research related to military brain injuries. This role involves direct interaction with service members, veterans, and their families, providing information and support regarding brain donation, as well as coordinating with various stakeholders to ensure the successful recovery and processing of donated specimens. The position requires a commitment to working on-call, including nights, weekends, and holidays, and offers a hybrid work schedule.

Responsibilities

  • Approaching and educating military members and veterans about brain donation and the Brain Donation Awareness Registry.
  • Educating families of potential donors about brain donation at the time of death.
  • Serving as the primary point of contact for potential donors and answering inquiries from families and healthcare professionals.
  • Screening donors and coordinating with local coroners and medical examiners for brain donation.
  • Collaborating with Peer/Family Educators on recruitment activities.
  • Performing tissue recovery duties in various settings, including mortuaries and healthcare facilities.
  • Verifying donor identity and reviewing consent documentation.
  • Assisting local coroners and pathologists with donated specimens.
  • Completing documentation for each donation and preparing specimens for shipping.
  • Coordinating the transport of the body following tissue recovery.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree plus at least 2 years of experience in human subject research, tissue donation, clinical laboratory work, nursing, paramedic/military medic, or related experience.
  • Associate's degree in a related field plus at least 4 years of job-related experience in similar fields.
  • In lieu of a degree, 10 years of related experience may be considered.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior experience working in military environments and interacting with service members and their families.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish.
  • Experience in the field of tissue or organ donation.
