About the position

The Diversion Specialist at Mel Trotter Ministries plays a crucial role in preventing homelessness by connecting individuals and families to essential resources and funding. Reporting to the Director of Diversion, this position involves networking with schools and various agencies to support the mission of the organization. The specialist will work closely with the grants team to maintain and secure funding while demonstrating compassion and support to families at risk of homelessness.

Responsibilities

  • Network with schools and agencies to connect individuals and families to resources and funding.
  • Support the grants team in maintaining current funding and securing new funding.
  • Impact diversion outcomes through partnerships with community leaders, agencies, schools, and churches.
  • Maintain knowledge of best practices and innovations in diversion efforts.
  • Connect individuals and families to available resources to prevent homelessness.
  • Provide respectful and compassionate interactions with at-risk individuals and partner agencies.
  • Maintain records and data to support department metrics goals.
  • Accept referrals from the Salvation Army Housing Assessment Program and CHC for diversion assistance.
  • Track data to ensure accurate representation in HMIS and Community Housing Connect.
  • Build and maintain relationships to bridge awareness gaps between rural and urban communities.
  • Encourage access to resources like Section 8 and Rapid Rehousing funds.
  • Assist clients with applications as needed.
  • Assess the relevance of Shelter Diversion for families uncovered in outreach.

Requirements

  • Minimum two years' experience working with a similar population.
  • Trauma-informed Care and De-escalation Training preferred.
  • Competent use of Microsoft Office Suite and willingness to learn additional technology platforms.
  • Professional communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Highly organized and detail-oriented, able to manage multiple projects.
  • Bilingual preferred.

  • Experience in community outreach and engagement.
  • Knowledge of local resources for homelessness prevention.
