Director, Product Management - Developer Experience

Zillow
$219,500 - $369,000Remote

About The Position

The Developer Experience (DevEx) team at Zillow Platform Product is responsible for building the foundational platforms and developer capabilities that power Zillow's consumer, partner, and employee experiences. This team owns the 'paved path' for software development at Zillow, encompassing local development environments, IDE integration, CI/CD pipelines, observability tools, the internal developer portal, AI-assisted development tools, and agentic workflows within the Software Development Life Cycle (SDLC). The team's goal is to significantly simplify the process for all Zillow product teams to build high-quality software more efficiently and independently, with AI as an integrated collaborator. This role specifically seeks a Director of Product Management to lead the strategy, roadmap, and team for the next generation of Zillow's developer platform, reporting to the VP of Product, Platform. The role involves managing a team of 4+ Product Managers and collaborating closely with Engineering, AI Platform, Security, and the staff/principal engineering community. A key focus will be on leveraging AI to reshape software development at Zillow, aiming to boost engineering productivity and enable non-engineering roles (like product managers, designers, and data scientists) to accelerate the product lifecycle through guided, agentic, and standardized experiences. This is a high-impact, cross-functional role influencing how Zillow ships products, iterates on consumer experiences, and leverages its AI-native advantage.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in Product Management, with significant experience in developer-facing, infrastructure, or platform products.
  • Experience leading multi-team, multi-year roadmaps at a Director level and shipping tools engineers genuinely enjoy using.
  • Deeply technical and AI-fluent, capable of discussing architecture trade-offs, SDLC tooling, and AI-assisted/agentic development with senior engineers.
  • Clear, opinionated point of view on how AI impacts software development.
  • Belief in Platform-as-a-Product principles, treating internal customers like external ones with focus on discovery, instrumentation, adoption funnels, and retiring ineffective tools.
  • Builder-mentality leader who can prototype with AI coding assistants and hire/develop PMs who do the same.
  • Exceptional collaborator and communicator, building trust with VP-level engineering partners through technical credibility, directness, and outcome-focus.
  • Ability to articulate the DevEx investment case to executives and the next-quarter roadmap to engineers.
  • Proven people leader and culture carrier with experience building and growing high-performing PM teams, focusing on retention, performance, and inclusion.
  • Hands-on technical background (software engineering, ML/AI engineering, or DevOps/platform engineering) earlier in career.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience scaling developer platforms at a consumer marketplace, large-enterprise SaaS, or AI-first company.
  • Direct experience evaluating, rolling out, or building agentic development tools (AI code review, autonomous test/repair, codegen, IDE assistants, agent harnesses).
  • Experience partnering with Security, Privacy, and Compliance on developer tool rollouts in regulated environments.
  • Track record of measuring developer productivity in credible ways (DORA, SPACE, developer surveys + qualitative discovery, not just lines-of-code).

Responsibilities

  • Set and own the multi-year vision and roadmap for Developer Experience (DevEx) at Zillow, covering the inner dev loop, CI/CD, release engineering, observability, the internal developer portal, and the AI/agentic toolchain.
  • Lead and grow a team of Product Managers, each responsible for a key area of the DevEx portfolio.
  • Partner with VP-level engineering leaders across Zillow Group to co-own outcomes and drive adoption of the developer platform.
  • Define the strategy for AI-assisted and agentic development, including evaluation, governance, rollout of AI coding tools, impact measurement, and extension to non-engineering users.
  • Make DevEx a measurable business by instrumenting and reporting on developer satisfaction, DORA/SPACE outcomes, AI-leveraged throughput, and paved path adoption.
  • Drive the DevEx strategy and roadmap for a portfolio including the inner dev loop (IDE, local environments, AI coding assistants), CI/CD and release engineering, observability and incident response tooling, the internal developer portal, and platform service enablement.
  • Define and execute Zillow's AI-for-development strategy, including selecting, integrating, and evaluating coding assistants, agentic SDLC tools, and review/quality automation; setting standards for safe, governed use; and making each surface area AI-native.
  • Accelerate the product lifecycle through paved-path experiences that allow non-engineering personas (PMs, designers, ops) to contribute via guarded agentic workflows with appropriate test, review, and rollout safeguards.
  • Treat internal teams as customers, conducting rigorous discovery with engineers, EMs, staff/principal engineers, and adjacent personas to translate developer pain into prioritized, instrumented bets.
  • Drive adoption and measurable outcomes by making the paved path highly valuable, and reporting DevEx impact in business terms (cycle time, change-failure rate, developer satisfaction, AI leverage ratio, % of changes shipped via paved road).
  • Partner deeply with engineering leadership to co-own the platform, including shared roadmaps, OKRs, and incident response.
  • Lead and develop the PM team by hiring, coaching, and promoting Platform-as-a-Product thinking, and representing the portfolio in executive forums.
