About The Position

An established and growing civil engineering consultant firm in the Phoenix, AZ metropolitan area has an opening for a Director of Water/Wastewater Engineering to lead and expand its Water/Wastewater practice. This position is Hybrid Remote. The Director of Water/Wastewater Engineering will provide strategic, technical, and operational leadership for the firm's Water/Wastewater Department. This role combines client engagement, team leadership, project oversight, and business development, with responsibility for driving continued growth across municipal and private-sector markets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering (or higher) from an accredited institution or similar field
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) license is desired; Out-of-state candidates must be able to obtain licensure within six months
  • At least 12-15+ years of progressive engineering experience, including at least 8 years in project management within the Water/Wastewater Management industry
  • Demonstrated experience and track record of delivering municipal water and wastewater projects
  • Experience with both municipal and private-sector markets would be ideal
  • Experience out of a Civil/Consulting Firm is preferred
  • Strong local market knowledge with established client relationships in the Phoenix metro area is preferred
  • Experience managing and developing engineering teams is preferred
  • Will consider Lead Project Managers or Engineering Managers open to moving into a Director level position

Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage the Water/Wastewater Department, overseeing a team of approximately 6-8 engineers and technical staff
  • Serve as a senior technical leader, providing guidance and quality oversight across projects
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with municipal and private clients, as well as local, state, and federal regulatory agencies
  • Represent the firm through effective presentations to city councils, community groups, and selection committees
  • Drive marketing and business development initiatives to grow the department, working closely with the Business Development Director and President
  • Supervise staff performance, including hiring, coaching, and conducting performance reviews
  • Define project scopes, develop schedules and work plans, and identify required subconsultants
  • Prepare and negotiate fee proposals
  • Maintain and expand existing client relationships while developing new business opportunities
  • Ensure accurate project documentation for both client and internal purposes
