About the position

The Director of Theatre Operations in collaboration with the Academic Department Manager (ADM) oversees the Department of Africana Studies / Rites and Reason Theatre’s public facing programming, which includes but is not limited to lectures, seminars, exhibitions, special projects and initiatives, and all of the Rites and Reason Theatre performances and productions. In addition, they may need to interface with university administrators, alumni, students and community members in the design, development and execution of Africana Studies-related initiatives across the campus. The incumbent collaborates with the Department Chair and the Department’s Faculty Advisory Committee to develop a theatrical season and execute programs, set and maintain project budgets, design and implement project management systems, and advance simultaneously occurring projects at varying stages of development. They work collaboratively with the Chair and ADM to create and supervise all project and event budgets. The Director of Theatre Operations supervises staff, oversees contracts for the hiring of artists as well as the hiring of contractual technical, and production staff. The incumbent also plays a critical role in marketing and promotion, box office management, audience development and strategic partnerships. In consultation with the Chair and the Faculty Advisory Committee, the person in this role is expected to interface with campus-wide university and administrative offices to design and execute a vision for the department in relation to arts programming across the university and within the field.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and execute Africana Studies-related initiatives across the campus.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree with 3-5 years of related experience, or Bachelor's Degree with 5-7 years of related experience.
  • Productive contacts in the professional arts world, preferably with Black theatre, dance, and/or music artists and scholars.
  • Prior financial management experience including writing grants preferred.
  • Supervisory experience required.
  • Working knowledge of professional theatre, dance or other related performance practices.
  • Strong organizational and management skills.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Extensive knowledge of Microsoft Office, Google Suite, Zoom, Canva, and Workday.
