About the position

The Director - Litigation position is responsible for overseeing and managing litigation against the Company on a national level. This role involves managing outside counsel, overseeing financial expenditures related to litigation, and ensuring effective communication with insurers and management. The Director primarily handles Employment Practice suits and claims, manages general liability suits, and assists with legal research and policy drafting. This position requires a full-time, on-site presence at the US headquarters in Parsippany, NJ, and reports directly to the Deputy General Counsel, Litigation.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage litigation pending against the Company on a national basis.
  • Manage outside counsel handling litigation cases.
  • Attend arbitrations, mediations, court hearings, and trials as necessary.
  • Manage financial expenditures of litigation cases, including reserving and billing.
  • Perform financial analyses to optimize case outcomes.
  • Handle Employment Practice suits and general liability suits and claims.
  • Respond to EP attorney letters received by the Company as needed.
  • Complete legal research projects as required.
  • Assist with drafting and implementing policies.
  • Review training and advertising materials as needed.
  • Act as the primary contact for the Risk Management Department for indemnity claims and tenders.
  • Manage subpoena functions and retention of outside counsel.
  • Oversee the summer legal intern program.
  • Assist the Deputy General Counsel with various reports and presentations.
  • Maintain monthly trial, arbitration, and mediation calendars.
  • Interact with insurers, brokers, and Group and Divisional Risk Management.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctorate from an accredited law school.
  • Admitted to the CA bar.
  • Minimum of ten years of legal practice, preferably with a prominent national law firm before moving in-house.
  • Prefer three years of in-house experience.
  • Prefer first chair trial experience.
  • Experience in employment law and general liability law is required.
  • Broad legal knowledge in litigation, employment law, and general liability law.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, Westlaw, etc.
  • Willingness to become proficient in company risk management and Legal Tracker billing programs.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal assistance.
  • In-depth understanding of how legal issues affect organizations.
  • Ability to develop legal strategy and objectives.
  • Excellent judgment and analytic skills with a solution-oriented approach.
  • First-class interpersonal and communication skills.
