About the position

The Director of Guidance works as the 'department chairperson' of the Student Services Department. The department in a typical South Bend high school usually consists of 4 counselors, a nurse, a social worker, a bilingual resource person, a career specialist, and a secretary/registrar.

Responsibilities

  • The director has expertise in all aspects of high school guidance including Classroom Guidance, Individual Planning, Responsive Services, and System Support.
  • In addition to his/her director duties, he/she serves as one of the grade-level counselors.
  • The director is the person who divides the tasks of the department among the other members.
  • The director is responsible for the organization of the yearly scheduling process for the entire school and for 8th grade public, private, and parochial school students.
  • The director is familiar with all standardized testing including ISTEP+GQE, NWEA, PSAT/NMSQT, SAT, SAT for Students with Disabilities, ACT, AP and ECA testing.
  • The director understands the subtleties of the making of the yearly master schedule and works closely with the administrative team in charge of the master schedule.
  • The director acts as a liaison to administrators, teachers and parents.
  • The director assists with the registration of new students including transcript evaluation of transfer students and selection of appropriate academic classes.
  • The director coordinates Senior Night, the annual Honors Breakfast, and the Senior Awards Assembly.
  • The director certifies the graduation list to the administration and reports the different types of diplomas to the State of Indiana and the central office.
  • The director conducts the annual senior survey and reports scholarships at the annual Senior Awards Assembly.
  • The director supports, assists, and makes suggestions to other members of the department in their assigned duties.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in guidance and counseling.
  • Indiana State certificate in school counseling.
  • Teaching experience with high school age students.
  • Observed ability to establish strong rapport with students and adults.
