About the position

The Director, Labor Counsel at Sunbelt Rentals is responsible for overseeing the labor relations function within the company. This role involves developing and executing a comprehensive labor strategy, managing collective bargaining agreements, and providing proactive legal counsel on labor-related issues. The Labor Counsel will work closely with company leadership, HR management, and external partners to ensure effective labor relations and compliance with legal standards.

Responsibilities

  • Create and execute a comprehensive labor strategy in collaboration with Company leadership and HR management.
  • Develop and lead the Company's approach to collective bargaining agreements, including negotiations and administration.
  • Manage problem resolution on complex grievances, arbitration preparation, and labor litigation issues.
  • Train and educate Company leaders on labor relations policies and support business clients in their labor needs.
  • Liaise with leadership and manage outside counsel to handle labor matters efficiently.
  • Work with HR partners to develop positive employee relations strategies.
  • Anticipate future labor relations issues and develop appropriate programs and responses.
  • Support other attorneys on various client issues as requested.

Requirements

  • J.D. from an accredited law school and licensed to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 7-9+ years of relevant labor law experience at a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
  • Ability to interact with a diverse group of constituents across all levels of the organization.
  • Creative problem-solving ability with a focus on maximizing value and minimizing risk.
  • Excellent communication skills and sound business and legal judgment.
  • Flexibility and adaptability in ambiguous situations while maintaining high ethical standards.
  • Availability and willingness for some travel.
