About the position
Applied Materials has an exciting opportunity for an experienced attorney to join our world class Global Litigation & Compliance team. This role will report to our IP risk management lead within Global Litigation and be a key member of a high impact team that investigates and solves complex intellectual property problems, driving integrated value protection strategy to collaborative solutions. This team member will collaborate closely with global information services, engineers, and cross-functional legal and security teams in order to advise on and navigate intellectual property and litigation risk. This team member will be expected to translate emerging risk trends and investigation outcomes into actionable insights for continuous improvements in how Applied protects its most valuable information and navigates litigation risk. This position will also have a hands-on-role in cross-functional strategic risk management programs with a heavy focus on intellectual property risk management, including regional risk assessments, internal intellectual property investigations, trade secret protection, insider threats, employee mobility, and competitive intelligence. Responsibilities will include advising on and developing risk management strategy and operations, process improvements, policy compliance, supply chain audits, third-party diligence, intellectual property risk mitigation in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures, and training and awareness.
Responsibilities
- Investigate complex intellectual property issues, focusing on information sharing and value protection to implement creative business enabling solutions.
- Serve as a key legal advisor for the management and execution of intellectual property risk management programs, including supplier IP compliance and insider risk.
- Counsel on intellectual property strategy, diligence, and data separation in mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures.
- Create playbooks with complex intellectual property and litigation risk mitigation strategies to support commercial teams in negotiations.
- Act as a resource for intellectual property protection policies and procedures, developing expertise in technology platforms used for information sharing.
- Own global intellectual property sourcing strategy and conduct regional risk assessments for protection of valuable intellectual property.
- Advise on the impact to intellectual property during cybersecurity incidents or other exfiltration events.
Requirements
- Juris Doctorate Degree and a minimum of 10-15 years of experience at a top tier law firm and in-house.
- Broad intellectual property experience, either transactional or litigation, and experience with various commercial contracts.
- Ability to tackle new and unforeseen issues at the intersection of technology, business, and law.
- Proactively identify complex problems and take ownership to solve them.
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team handling risk management programs and global initiatives.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate complex legal issues for non-legal teams with minimal supervision.
- Ability to juggle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively, adapting quickly as needed.
- Comfortable creating processes, drafting policies, and implementing controls for risk management.
- Willingness to assist where needed with a positive attitude and sense of humor.
- High capacity for complexity and ability to explain legal principles in practical terms.
- Collaborative nature with strong partnership-building skills.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience in the semiconductor industry.
- Experience with trade secret litigation and/or insider risk.
- Experience conducting complex internal investigations and/or managing high stakes intellectual property litigation.
- Familiarity with eDiscovery or data forensic tools and processes.
