About the position

The Director of Geospatial Technologies is a senior-level managerial role responsible for providing technical leadership in geospatial technologies, including GIS and GPS, for the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR). This position is accountable for developing and implementing a geospatial strategy and roadmap to enhance geospatial services and solutions, ensuring alignment with corporate goals. The director will lead initiatives related to data modeling, geo analytics, and the deployment of geospatial tools to support the Enterprise Asset Management (EAM) program, which oversees approximately $4.4 billion in physical assets. The role also involves collaboration with various departments and external agencies to drive geospatial technology efforts across the MTA.

Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain LIRR GIS infrastructure, including upgrades and enterprise geo-database management.
  • Translate departmental and corporate business needs into functional geospatial solutions.
  • Plan and implement geospatial solutions to support interdepartmental needs.
  • Lead geo-analytics efforts, including asset utilization and safety analysis.
  • Support desktop GIS users and provide necessary training and resources.
  • Establish and oversee data governance and quality for GIS and EAM data.
  • Develop geospatial solutions to support capital programs and asset inventory reporting.
  • Select, develop, and motivate personnel within the department.
  • Promote safe work practices and create a professional work environment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Business Administration, Statistics, Engineering, Finance, or Information Services, plus a minimum of 12 years of GIS Technology experience with at least 5 years in a managerial role.
  • Experience in strategic planning and execution.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong negotiating and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven leadership ability and experience in GIS planning and development.
  • In-depth knowledge of geospatial methodologies, GIS, GPS, and related technologies.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree in Geospatial Technology, Geography, Engineering, Planning, or related field.
  • Experience with EAM tools such as Hexagon EAM or Maximo.
  • Understanding of engineering railroad operations and planning.
