About the position

The Direct Support Professional II (DSP II) at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) plays a crucial role in supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This position involves providing direct care, implementing treatment plans, and assisting individuals in achieving their personal goals. The DSP II works as part of a team in a supportive environment, ensuring the well-being and independence of those served. The role requires flexibility in working hours, including evenings, nights, and weekends, and may involve driving a state-owned vehicle.

Responsibilities

  • Implement habilitation and rehabilitation programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
  • Observe individuals for signs of disease or injury and document observations.
  • Report significant changes in individuals' conditions or behaviors.
  • Assist in transporting individuals for scheduled activities and emergencies.
  • Administer first aid and attend to healthcare needs under supervision.
  • Evacuate individuals during emergencies or drills.
  • Prevent or manage aggressive behavior and administer CPR when necessary.
  • Document daily activities and interactions with individuals.
  • Participate in the development of individual treatment plans.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent, or previous employment experience.
  • Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire.
  • Ability to speak and read English.
  • Experience in behavior programs for persons with intellectual developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Experience in writing reports is preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities is preferred.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, Ukeru, and/or Safe Use of Restraint (SUR) is preferred.
  • 6 months of work experience in a related field.
