About the position

The Direct Support Professional III position at the Texas Health and Human Services Commission involves providing essential care and support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. This role is crucial in helping these individuals achieve their personal goals and maintain a higher level of wellness and independence. The position requires working in a team environment, implementing treatment plans, and ensuring the safety and well-being of the individuals served. The DSP III will also have opportunities for career advancement and may take on leadership responsibilities as a shift/team lead.

Responsibilities

  • Implement habilitation and rehabilitation programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Teach life skills such as feeding, dressing, and personal hygiene.
  • Observe individuals for signs of disease or injury and document observations.
  • Assist in transporting individuals for scheduled activities and emergencies.
  • Administer first aid and attend to healthcare needs under supervision.
  • Evacuate individuals during emergencies or drills.
  • Prevent or manage aggressive behavior and administer CPR when necessary.
  • Document daily activities and significant changes in individuals' conditions.
  • Provide training and mentorship to new Direct Support Professionals.
  • Serve as a shift/team lead to ensure care and support activities are completed.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • 6 months of work experience in a related field required.
  • 1 year of experience working with individuals with mental health/intellectual developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Valid Texas driver's license or ability to obtain it within 90 days of hire preferred.
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, Ukeru, and/or Safe Use of Restraint preferred.
  • Ability to read, write, and speak English clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to make decisions and use good judgment in critical situations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience implementing behavior programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Experience writing reports related to individual care.
  • Ability to train and mentor others effectively.
