About the position

The Diagnostic Technician is responsible for drawing blood, obtaining specimens, and transporting them to the laboratory. This role requires positive patient identification, instructing patients on specimen collection procedures, and ensuring all required lab forms are obtained at the time of service. The technician will also research unusual test requests, document necessary information, and maintain a clean and sanitary work environment. Additionally, the technician will perform non-invasive cardiology testing, complete cardiac test ordering and billing, and inform relevant staff about changes in patient orders and workflow. The position involves training and mentoring other staff members and making recommendations for improvements in quality and efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Draws blood and obtains other specimens and transports specimens to the Laboratory.
  • Introduces self and positively identifies the patient prior to specimen collection.
  • Instructs patients on proper specimen collection procedures.
  • Ensures that all applicable required Lab forms are obtained at the time of service.
  • Researches unusual test requests using available resources.
  • Documents necessary information in hospital information systems or on department log sheets.
  • Wears appropriate PPE per department and hospital policy.
  • Assists with the collection and transportation of blood and other clinical specimens.
  • Demonstrates the ability to maintain harmonious relations with patients and staff.
  • Practices efficient use of laboratory supplies and checks inventory.
  • Participates in department staff meetings and attends mandatory programs.
  • Responsible for maintaining testing areas in a clean, sanitary condition.
  • Consistently provides service excellence to all patients and co-workers.
  • Performs other work-related duties as assigned.
  • Performs non-invasive cardiology testing according to department policy.
  • Completes Cardiac Test ordering and billing information.
  • Informs staff regarding changes in patient orders and workflow.
  • Trains, orients, and mentors other staff members.
  • Makes recommendations for improvements in quality and efficiency.
  • Handles and resolves specimen collection problems.
  • Maintains professional growth and development through various means.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, write, and communicate in English.
  • Minimum of High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • (PBT) - Phlebotomy Certification.
  • (EKG) - EKG Certification.
  • (BLS) - Current Basic Life Support Certification.
  • Good organizational and multi-tasking skills.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Acute care hospital experience.
