About the position

The Diagnostic Electrician - Power Distribution role at Freeport-McMoRan involves the removal, repair, and installation of electrical components and systems, with a focus on advanced troubleshooting and systems/process optimization. The position emphasizes safety and compliance with regulatory standards while providing opportunities for mentorship and training of other electrical workers. The role is critical in maintaining the operational efficiency of the Miami smelter and rod plant, which processes copper concentrate and is a key source of sulphuric acid for North American leaching operations.

Responsibilities

  • Removal, repair, and installation of electrical components and systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on industrial electrical and instrumentation equipment.
  • Conduct advanced troubleshooting and systems/process optimization.
  • Mentor or train other electrical workers as needed.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory agency standards during installations and renovations.
  • Follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) and participate in safety and environmental activities.

Requirements

  • Completion of an approved Certified Electronics, Electrical and/or Instrumentation Program, or a minimum of four years of experience in Industrial Electrical and/or Instrumentation repair and maintenance, or an Associate's degree or Trade School Certification in a related field with two years of experience.
  • Experience in troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of electrical circuits and connected equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, and apply information from technical manuals, prints, and schematics for troubleshooting and repair.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possession of minimum personal tools as described by the department tool list.

Nice-to-haves

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Experience with VFDs, PLC, HMI, and/or SCADA Control Systems.
  • Experience working with low and medium voltages.
  • Experience with AC and/or DC controls.
  • Experience with instrumentation devices.
  • Experience with diagnostic electrical test equipment.
  • Experience with Transformer Maintenance and Repair.
