About the position

The Deaf/Hard of Hearing Language Facilitator at Goshen Community Schools plays a crucial role in facilitating communication for deaf and hard of hearing students within an educational environment. This position aims to minimize linguistic, cultural, and physical barriers, ensuring that DHH students can effectively communicate with their peers, teachers, and other school staff. The facilitator will support the educational team by providing assistance in various settings, including classroom instruction, lunch, and transitions, while also promoting the students' independence and self-advocacy skills.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitate communication between DHH students and general education teachers, administrators, and peers.
  • Assist with personal needs of students, including diapering, feeding, and lifting, as directed by the building principal.
  • Participate in routine staffing, case conferences, and job-specific training.
  • Collaborate with the teacher of the DHH and other staff to optimize student access to auditory and visual information.
  • Monitor student comprehension and provide reinforcement and remediation as needed.
  • Introduce and explain vocabulary, and coordinate the provision of lecture notes for DHH students.
  • Preview classroom settings and instructional materials to ensure effective facilitation of content.
  • Promote independence in social, self-advocacy, and academic areas.
  • Take comprehensive and legible notes for DHH students, ensuring accurate conveyance of information.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two-year degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience working with DHH students in a public-school setting preferred.
  • General background in liberal arts, science, and math to understand Pre K - 12 curriculum areas.
  • Willingness to participate in training for assistive devices and language facilitation techniques.
  • EIPA 3.0 preferred, working toward 3.5 or higher.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to communicate using sign language.
  • Experience in public speaking.
  • Knowledge of cultures involved with DHH communities.
