The Burke Museum connects the past, present, and future through collections, exhibits, and programs relating to the natural world, the people and cultures of Washington State, and cutting-edge science. Our collections provide a spark for stories and ideas and connect people to each other and to their environment. Until 2019, they were hidden behind walls; inaccessible to the very people and communities they are intended to serve.
Today, the Burke's visitor experience centers on removing the barriers that have traditionally separated the public side of the museum (the exhibits) from its working side (the collections storerooms, labs, and other workspaces). Along with six brand new galleries to experience, every visit to the Burke is different because every day brings new work to see behind the glass, encouraging our visitors to become repeat visitors, members, and donors. Burke members and donors provide essential funding that keeps the museum running. They are some of the museum's biggest fans and we consider them a part of the Burke family. In return for their support, members and donors receive a variety of benefits and invitations to exclusive events that allow them to interact with the Burke and our staff on a deeper level.

In support of the Burke's commitment to Diversity, Equity, Access, Inclusion and Decolonization (DEAI/D), the Burke is undergoing a yearlong assessment and healing project with staff and volunteers museum-wide. This project will help the museum maintain its momentum and reinforce its dedication to DEAI/Decolonization in perpetuity.
