About the position

First Solar reserves the right to offer you a role most applicable to your experience and skillset. The position involves performing material and device research to enhance thin film solar cell performance and stability while reducing manufacturing costs. You will be responsible for projects or functions that enable department goals and deliverables, planning, executing, and characterizing development engineering experiments in both laboratory and manufacturing environments. The role applies statistical and engineering methods to optimize organizational effectiveness and improve methods for use by others.

Responsibilities

  • Identify opportunities for improvement in solar cell efficiency, material selection, and process/equipment design through engineering, scientific, or empirical methods.
  • Apply state of the art techniques for material analysis, statistical analysis of data, or execution/planning of experiments.
  • Develop a work plan that can address problems with well understood solution paths.
  • Determine and evaluate material specifications for improved performance.
  • Determine and evaluate tool/equipment specifications.
  • Communicate effectively with internal and external partners and customers.
  • Support cross-functional projects and take ownership of sub-deliverables.
  • Train, mentor, and manage junior associates.
  • Comply with Company's Environmental, Quality, Safety, or any other policies that have been enforced.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Associate's Degree in an engineering discipline or similar technical discipline and 15 years of relevant technical experience or 2 years of experience as a Development Engineer I at First Solar.
  • Bachelor's Degree in an engineering discipline or similar technical discipline and 5 years of relevant technical experience or 2 years of experience as a Development Engineer I at First Solar.
  • Master's Degree in an engineering discipline or similar technical discipline and 3 years of relevant technical experience or 2 years of experience as a Development Engineer I at First Solar.
  • Ph.D. in an engineering discipline or similar technical discipline, without prior technical work experience.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with perovskite solar cell development and processing.
  • Experience with wet coating applications (Slot Die, Spin, Spray, Roll, etc.) and drying equipment (Thermal, Air knife, Vacuum ovens).
  • Experience with fluid mechanics in coating operations and drying unit operations.
  • Mechanical aptitude with willingness for hands-on equipment upgrades and troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience with statistical data analyses, such as Multivariate Analysis, Regression Analysis, Design of Experiments, and Measurement System Analysis.
  • Experience with using statistical software (JMP preferred).
  • CAD Experience a plus, but not a must.
  • Familiarity with semiconductor device physics at a basic level, but not a must.
  • Familiarity with film characterization techniques and measurements such as XRD, SEM, SIMS, AFM, XPS, and DMA, etc.
