About the position

The Detention Officer position at the City of Independence Police Department is a part-time role responsible for processing individuals into the detention facility. This includes managing the intake of personal belongings, booking, fingerprinting, and searching detainees. The officer will monitor the detention area to ensure safety and security, coordinate with courts for bonding and arraignment, and maintain the facility's cleanliness and order. The role also involves data entry and communication with the Detective Unit regarding felony arrests.

Responsibilities

• Process individuals into the Independence Police Detention facility.
• Manage intake of personal belongings, booking, fingerprinting, and searching of detainees.
• Monitor the detention area to provide safety and security for arrestees.
• Coordinate bonding and/or arraignment of detainees with Municipal/State/Federal Court.
• Provide courts with proper documentation.
• Arrange meals and provisions for personal needs of prisoners.
• Maintain the detention facility, including cleaning cells and laundry.
• Perform data entry of required records and reports.
• Inform the Detective Unit of felony arrests and arraignments.
• Complete other duties as directed.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED, or equivalent education, training, and experience.
• Aptitude in record keeping, report preparation, and computer applications.
• Effective communication skills.
• Must complete required NIMS level training within the first six months of hire.
• Complete certification in CPR, First Aid, AED, and LVNR within three years.
• Knowledge of applicable detention laws and ability to maintain order and security within the detention unit.
