About The Position

A design engineer analyzes, assesses and investigates all safety aspects of design, construction, installation, maintenance, alteration, repair, testing and operation of regulated equipment and operations. Provides engineering leadership and advice concerning design, condition and configuration to safety officers, manufacturers and industry.

Requirements

  • A degree in an engineering discipline relevant to Technical Safety BC’s operations plus 10 years’ experience in the field of professional engineering supplemented by registration with EGBC, or similar.
  • Comprehensive and current knowledge of engineering practices related to equipment, infrastructure and systems that Technical Safety BC regulates.
  • Excellent understanding of industry codes and standards such as the ASME CSA Mechanical, Gas and Electrical Codes, NFPA, ASTM, ISO and MSS-SP standards.
  • Ability to interpret and apply engineering and code intent to practical industry design, construction and operating applications.
  • Extensive working knowledge of design practice, operating procedures, preventative maintenance and repair methods for equipment.
  • Diversified experience in fields of engineering including the design, construction, inspection, maintenance and operation of equipment and systems typically acquired through a minimum of ten years in industrial facilities, design or consulting engineering.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • General computer skills and knowledge of application of various engineering software including spreadsheet, word processing and electronic mail.
  • The ability to occasionally travel (up to 25% of the time) to a variety of sites involved with Technical Safety BC regulated equipment and systems which may include exposure to operating, industrial and construction environments.

Nice To Haves

  • Additional qualifications such as National Board of Boiler Inspectors Commission with an “A” endorsement would be an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze, evaluate, monitor, and audit engineering work of clients or condition assessments of equipment for review or registration; provide feedback and guidance in support of clients’ demonstration of compliance or engineering suitability.
  • Provide and strengthen engineering leadership and participation with a wide variety of engineering, design and code related enquiries and assessments from industry representatives, manufacturers, consulting engineers, and Chief Engineers of plants; interpret and clarify engineering intent; suggest and detail acceptable strategies utilizing basic engineering techniques for alternative designs not within the scope of code guidelines. Contribute to the strengthening of engineering participation within industry challenges.
  • Evaluate and approve alternative design proposals to ensure that such alternative approaches are safe and consistent with the objectives of codes, standards and engineering practices.
  • Provide technical advice and direction to Authority staff. In collaboration with the engineering team, internal/external stakeholders, develop and implement continuous improvement initiatives for the engineering program.
  • Consult with equivalent engineers in other jurisdictions regarding codes, standards and manufacturing processes, to determine acceptability of equipment approved and imported from other jurisdictions. Participate and provide leadership with the development of an engineering community of practice.
  • Be accountable for the continuous improvement, development and education relating to engineering circulars, bulletins or other industry or company guidance documents. Develop appropriate spreadsheets and other engineering tools to enhance client accountability, professional reliance, and the design review process.
