About the position

The Deputy Division Chief position within the Consumer Advocacy & Response Division (CARD) of the Massachusetts Attorney General's Office is a pivotal role focused on consumer protection. The Deputy Division Chief will oversee the review, investigation, and resolution of consumer complaints filed with the Attorney General's Office (AGO). This includes managing team workflow, assigning consumer complaints, and fostering collaboration among team members. The Deputy Division Chief will also provide training and support related to consumer protection topics and skills development for consumer specialists and administrative staff. This role is essential in ensuring that the AGO effectively advocates for Massachusetts consumers in various areas, including debt collection, mortgage lending, housing, and professional services. In addition to managing consumer complaints, the Deputy Division Chief will assist with complex projects within the Division and support cross-divisional work. Effective communication with outside agencies is crucial to maintain and foster relationships that benefit the Division's mission. The Deputy Division Chief will play a significant role in creating a positive work environment, working closely with all staff, interns, and volunteers across the AGO's four offices. The position is based in Boston, with occasional travel required to regional offices in Worcester, Springfield, and New Bedford. The role is full-time and non-exempt, with a current hybrid work model that includes some remote workdays.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the review, investigation, and resolution of consumer complaints filed with the AGO.
  • Manage team workflow and assign consumer complaints to team members.
  • Foster collaboration among team members and serve as a training resource for division staff.
  • Provide training and support related to consumer protection subject matter and skills development.
  • Assist with handling complex projects within the Division.
  • Support cross-divisional work and communicate effectively with outside agencies.
  • Foster a positive work environment in CARD, working with all staff, interns, and volunteers.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience is required.
  • Preference for candidates with a J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Experience in individual consumer advocacy, mediation, or intake services in a legal, government, or nonprofit setting is preferred.
  • Experience overseeing and supporting the work of others is preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations is preferred.
  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian Creole, or Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) is a plus.
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational, program planning, and analytical skills are required.
  • Effective writing skills and reading comprehension are necessary.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and using a database is required.
  • Proven record of sound judgment and decision-making is essential.
  • Proven customer service skills are necessary.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment, managing multiple deadlines across various projects.
