About the position

The Deputy Director of the Georgia Forestry Commission (GFC) plays a crucial role in leading the agency's efforts to fulfill its mission, vision, and values. This position involves overseeing daily operations, managing resources, and ensuring effective communication across all levels of the organization. The Deputy Director will also be responsible for evaluating the effectiveness of department activities, implementing strategies for improvement, and providing leadership to direct reports and agency staff.

Responsibilities

  • Oversees agency's daily operations.
  • Serves as the director's primary coordinator for evaluating projects and programs, determining resource allocation, and providing oversight in management.
  • Defines, develops, and implements effective strategies for organizational advancement.
  • Ensures communication of information between all levels of the organization and successful implementation of strategies.
  • Measures and identifies critical success factors necessary to reach goals and required results.
  • Oversees customer support services and satisfaction, ensuring operational performance and quality outcomes.
  • Leads in identifying and implementing processes and changes to drive efficiencies across the agency.
  • Monitors financial performance and risk profile; assists with agency budget preparation and provides guidance on contracts and purchases.
  • Supervises department chiefs and region managers, providing coaching and developmental opportunities.
  • Assists agency director in management functions and represents the director in various committees or functions.

Requirements

  • 4-year degree in forestry, natural resources, business, or a related field.
  • Seven years of progressive experience managing professional level staff or ten years of related professional experience with seven years of progressive management experience.
  • Knowledge of operational activities such as fire control, forest management, and agency processes.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret data, situations, and business processes.
  • Effective presentation skills.
  • Highly proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.

Nice-to-haves

  • Currently in an associate chief or executive leadership team level position.
  • Ten or more years of progressive leadership experience with GFC or demonstrated operational leadership in the forestry industry.
  • Basic accounting college coursework and understanding of budget and legislative processes.
  • Understanding of the diversity of Georgia and external factors impacting the commission's mission.
