The position of Medical Examiner involves investigating the circumstances of a variety of deaths, including unexplained or violent deaths, that fall under the jurisdiction of the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. The death investigator gathers information about the case to assist the forensic pathologist in determining the cause and manner of death. Duties include examination of the deceased, examination of death scenes, collection and preservation of evidence, and ensuring that deaths are investigated according to established standards of practice. Death investigators are also required to participate in after-hours on-call on a rotational basis.

Responsibilities

  • Investigate circumstances of various deaths under the jurisdiction of the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.
  • Gather information to assist forensic pathologists in determining cause and manner of death.
  • Examine the deceased and death scenes, and collect and preserve evidence.
  • Document necessary information in written report format and submit reports to the medical examiner or forensic pathologist.
  • Perform death scene investigations including written and photographic documentation.
  • Establish and maintain chain of custody of the decedent's belongings.
  • Transport the deceased to the Eastern Regional Forensic Pathology Center for examination.
  • Interact with families and friends of the deceased to gather information for identification.
  • Prepare the Report of Investigation by Medical Examiner (RIME) and issue death certificates.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher in Criminal Justice/Forensics, biological science, chemistry, or medical technology
  • American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigators (ABMDI) certification
  • Certification as a Medical Examiner through the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner
