About the position

The Dean of Behavioral and Social Sciences at Point Loma Nazarene University (PLNU) is responsible for overseeing the academic and administrative leadership of the School. This role includes mission alignment, program development, strategic planning, and faculty recruitment, among other responsibilities. The Dean will advocate for the School's visibility and effectiveness while collaborating with various stakeholders and ensuring the quality and relevance of academic programs.

Responsibilities

  • Encourage a culture of discipleship and faith expression within the School.
  • Foster an environment of excellence and innovation in academic teaching, research, and intellectual achievement of the faculty.
  • Interact with and tailor approach to working with a diverse community of students and university campus administrators.
  • Manage academic program planning, faculty matters, and administration including staffing, budgets, and facilities.
  • Oversee current academic programs and develop new programs in consultation with the Strategic Enrollment Planning Committee.
  • Develop long-range and short-range strategic plans to ensure and advance the strategic priorities and mission of the School and university.
  • Provide vision and leadership for interprofessional education to foster a collaborative learning environment.
  • Support academic programs through monitoring of annual program metrics and ensuring accreditation success.
  • Encourage interdisciplinary engagements within the School and with other academic units.
  • Administer the School's budgets and oversee effective use of university resources.
  • Enhance the University and School profile with university partners to increase PLNU's reputation.
  • Ensure the successful recruitment, onboarding, and orientation of new faculty members.
  • Oversee the faculty evaluation process and recommend continuation of faculty contracts to the Provost.
  • Collaborate with Enrollment and Marketing to promote the School's academic programs.
  • Partner with University Advancement on fundraising projects and alumni networks.
  • Establish a communication network for student feedback about significant issues in academic departments.
  • Cultivate a vibrant and collaborative community within the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
  • Serve as the mediator in resolving problems among academic unit leaders, faculty, staff, and students.
  • Oversee and suggest improvements to the physical learning environment.

Requirements

  • Terminal degree in one of the disciplines represented within the School of Behavioral and Social Sciences.
  • Successful administrative experience, preferably at the department chair level or higher.
  • Demonstration of appropriate developmental leadership styles and ability to work strategically and communicate effectively.
  • Understanding and appreciation for Christian liberal arts education rooted in the Wesleyan tradition.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.
  • A distinguished record of achievement as a teacher-scholar or significant leadership experience in higher education.

  • Experience with multiple modes of content delivery and knowledge of best pedagogical practices.
