About the position

The University of California, Berkeley is seeking a visionary leader to serve as the next dean of the Graduate School of Journalism. This role presents a unique opportunity to shape the future of journalism education and empower the next generation of journalists. The dean will be responsible for advancing journalism education and practice, adapting to a rapidly changing media landscape, and enhancing collaboration within the school and across the campus.

Responsibilities

• Lead the Graduate School of Journalism in fulfilling its mission of advancing journalism education and practice.
• Shape the future of journalism education by adapting to changes in the media landscape.
• Build a more inclusive community of faculty, staff, and students.
• Manage resources thoughtfully and increase philanthropic support for the school's faculty, programs, and students.
• Serve on the university's Council of Deans and collaborate on university-wide initiatives.
• Engage with diverse constituent groups to build support for journalism education.

Requirements

• Advanced degree or a minimum of 10 years of professional journalism experience.
• Substantive leadership and administrative experience in journalism or related fields.
• National or international reputation as an expert practitioner or scholar in journalism.
• Ability to act as a thought leader in the national conversation on journalism.
• Comfortable working within a shared governance model between Administration and the Academic Senate.

Nice-to-haves

• Prior academic experience in journalism or a related field.
• Evidence of high scholarly research, publications, and/or media analysis.
