About the position

Under the general direction of the Vice President of Instruction, the Interim Dean of Language and Communication performs duties in the administration and supervision of the instructional area, including instructor assignments, class schedules, staff evaluation and development, curriculum evaluation and development, budget recommendations, and facilities utilization and administration for day, extended day, weekend and summer offerings. The academic disciplines the Dean of Language and Communication currently supervises are: ASL - English Interpreter Preparation, Deaf Culture and ASL Studies, English as a Second Language, World Languages, and Communications. Responsibilities

  • Providing general supervision of area affairs.
  • Overseeing the Language and Communication HomeBase and the ESL (English as a Second Language) Center.
  • Coordinating the activities of area faculty and staff.
  • Assisting faculty and staff with student problems and concerns.
  • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating support staff assigned to the division.
  • Hiring, supervising, and evaluating faculty who work within the division.
  • Coordinating with division faculty to develop, schedule, and evaluate semester schedule of courses.
  • Working effectively with district and college staff in all areas of responsibility.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends, when necessary.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Have a master's degree from an accredited institution.
  • Have one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's administrative assignment.
  • Have an equity-minded focus, responsiveness, and sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, including those with physical or learning disabilities as it relates to differences in learning styles; and successfully foster and support an inclusive educational and employment environment.
