About the position

The Dean for an Instructional Division integrates and provides academic and administrative support to faculty and a diverse student population. The Dean requires the ability to direct and integrate the activities of an academic division and its related functions and services, to provide leadership over curriculum, faculty and support staff, and assure excellence in delivering higher education. The Dean also requires the ability to facilitate professional development, establish standards and assess performance of faculty members.

Responsibilities

  • Provides leadership for program development, plans for current additions, modifications, and deletions to curriculum.
  • Directs and prepares the schedule of classes and provides for proper staffing of classes, considering faculty loads, class size, and course offerings.
  • Communicates with faculty by conducting regular meetings to facilitate planning and collegial decision-making.
  • Conducts performance appraisals in compliance with District standards and contractual obligations.
  • Provides leadership for faculty and staff development and learning opportunities that enhance effectiveness in the teaching and learning processes.
  • Maintains up-to-date knowledge of new developments and innovations in community colleges and higher education.
  • Directs development of division budgets and manages financial resources consistent with policy and sound financial controls.
  • Works cooperatively with other administrators and managers to coordinate programs and services across the curriculum.
  • Facilitates academic partnerships and maintains communications with Division faculty, faculty in feeder high schools and four-year transfer institutions.
  • Encourages excellence in teaching.
  • Communicates with leaders in the private and public sectors and in educational agencies to determine needs for new courses and programs.
  • Manages Division facilities including classroom spaces and special use spaces.
  • Provides leadership in new and emerging technologies in support of student success, program development, hiring faculty in emerging fields.
  • May apply for annual grants to fund mandatory functions of departments where college budgets do not cover cost of operations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned that support the objective of the position.
  • Required to abide by all District policies and procedures including Board Policy 3050 - Code of Professional Ethics.

Requirements

  • Possession of a master's degree AND one year of formal training, internship, or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrator's administrative assignment.
  • Advanced specialized professional knowledge of the theories, principles, and practices associated with higher education curriculum and instruction.
  • Specialized professional knowledge of collective bargaining, working conditions and evaluation practices.
  • Advanced knowledge to manage facilities and understand and advocate for division specific needs in labs and instructional facilities.
  • Basic understanding of accreditation processes and program or college specific accreditation needs.
  • In-depth knowledge of matriculation regulations and articulation agreements.
  • Knowledge of and skill at teaching and learning processes that enhance student success and outcomes.
  • Skills in organization and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and administrative needs.
  • Working knowledge of the budget preparation and administration process.
  • In-depth knowledge of the principles of functional leadership, training, and performance evaluation.
  • Working knowledge of pertinent national and state regulations affecting curriculum and academic accreditation.
  • Advanced human relations skills to deliver formal and influential presentations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Doctorate degree, preferred in one of the disciplines in the Division that will be managed.
