Data Steward Intern

Stanley MartinReston, VA
Hybrid

About The Position

The Data Steward Intern supports the EDAP (Enterprise Data & Analytics Platform) team in building and maintaining a comprehensive data catalog for Stanley Martin Homes. The intern will conduct structured interviews with business and technical stakeholders across divisions, compile clear business definitions for data entities and fields, and translate those definitions into catalog entries that make EDAP data assets discoverable and trustworthy. This is a meaningful, project-driven internship that contributes directly to how data is understood and used across the organization.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a college or university program (rising sophomore or above) in Information Systems, Computer Science, Business Analytics, Statistics, or related field.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to conduct structured interviews and synthesize findings into clear documentation.
  • Basic familiarity with data concepts—tables, fields, relationships, and the difference between a business definition and a technical implementation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel, for documentation and tracking.
  • Organized and detail-oriented, with ability to manage a catalog of data entity definitions across multiple subject areas simultaneously.
  • Available for full-time internship hours (June–August 2025), based in or able to commute to the Reston, VA area or work remotely as approved.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow through on documentation or research projects, through academic work, extracurriculars, or prior experience.
  • Genuine curiosity about data and how it connects business operations to systems and reporting.

Nice To Haves

  • Coursework or self-study in data management, business analysis, information systems, or related topics is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Schedule and conduct structured interviews with business analysts, division managers, and subject matter experts to gather definitions, business rules, and usage context for key data entities.
  • Translate interview notes and source system context into clear, business-friendly definitions for data entities, attributes, and metrics, following EDAP documentation standards.
  • Enter and maintain approved definitions, data lineage notes, and ownership information in the EDAP data catalog, ensuring entries are accurate, complete, and consistently formatted.
  • Partner with data engineers and BI developers to validate that business definitions align with how data is physically structured in Snowflake and surfaced in Omni BI reports.
  • Maintain a running inventory of data entities interviewed, definitions drafted, and catalog entries completed, providing weekly progress updates to the EDAP team lead.
  • Coordinate with business owners across divisions to schedule interviews, gather feedback on draft definitions, and obtain sign-off before finalizing catalog entries.
  • Follow EDAP data governance standards for naming conventions, definition formatting, and metadata completeness throughout all catalog contributions.
