About the position

The Dairy Plant Manager at Alpenrose Dairy is a critical leadership role responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the dairy plant, ensuring the production of safe, quality food while managing a team of up to 20 direct reports. This position requires a hands-on approach, with approximately 90% of the time spent on the production floor. The manager will be tasked with optimizing processes, meeting customer expectations, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, direct and run optimum day-to-day operations to exceed customer expectations.
  • Onboard new hires and provide continuous training, including performance reviews and ongoing coaching.
  • Provide day-to-day operational leadership for plant staff.
  • Set daily/weekly objectives for the plant based on schedules, corporate goals, and customer needs.
  • Increase production, asset capacity, and flexibility while minimizing unnecessary costs and maintaining quality standards.
  • Ensure fulfillment of customer orders within specifications of quality, quantity, and cost.
  • Lead compliance with all Safe Quality Food and Food Safety requirements for the plant.
  • Ensure production of a quality product in compliance with Federal and State guidelines.
  • Develop, monitor, and ensure timely completion of plant goals/action plans, both short and long term.
  • Share a trusting relationship with the team and work with HR to recruit new staff as needed.
  • Develop and maintain Production work instructions, SOPs, and SSOPs.
  • Communicate plant production-related requirements and solutions to relevant departments.
  • Analyze plant results and discuss areas of concern with the management team.
  • Maintain/update training program for all Dairy Plant employees, including new hire training SOPs.
  • Identify process bottlenecks and recommend solutions for process flow improvement.
  • Manage key performance metrics, including labor productivity, out-of-stock rate, and product waste rate.
  • Partner and collaborate with internal and external managers and vendors, building strong business relationships.
  • Practice and support all Standard Operating Procedures, Safe Chemical Handling procedures, and Good Manufacturing Practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in business, Operations, Supply Chain Management, or related field of study.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in a managerial role in a dairy/butter plant and a union workforce.
  • Software proficiency as it relates to general business functions, management systems, and supply chain activities preferred.
